Nurturing young talent: welcoming local work experience students to Languages United

At Languages United, we believe that being rooted in our local community is one of our greatest strengths. As a boutique language school in the heart of Bath, we take pride not only in welcoming students from across the globe but also in playing an active role in our city and surrounding area.

At the beginning of June, we had the pleasure of hosting two bright and enthusiastic AS level students, Livia and Thea, from St Laurence School in nearby Bradford on Avon, for their week-long work experience placement. From the moment they joined us, their curiosity, creativity and willingness to contribute shone through.

During their time with us, we gave them a variety of tasks designed to be both meaningful and engaging – from helping to develop activities for our summer school, to supporting our social media planning and reflecting on the language learning process. They were also introduced to the inner workings of a language school, gaining an understanding of how we create inclusive, immersive learning experiences for international students.

At the end of their placement, they shared this thoughtful reflection:

*“This week we gained a better understanding of a real working environment, allowing us to build skills like communication, creativity and practical skills. We felt so welcomed and supported, which helped us build confidence to talk to others and ask for help.

We now have a much clearer understanding of what our future might look like and the world of work seems far less daunting.

We loved creating fun activities for summer school and social media, and thinking about how others develop language. It gave us insight into how language is learnt, and different ways we might learn other languages too.

We were surprised by how quickly we adjusted – thanks to everyone being so friendly – and how much we enjoyed the experience, as it made even simple tasks enjoyable.

We really feel this has benefitted us and will help us in the future. Thank you to everyone for giving us this great opportunity and making it so fun and gratifying!”*

Their words echo everything we strive for at Languages United: to boost confidence, communication, creativity and kindness – not only in our students but also in everyone who becomes part of our extended family.

Whether it's international students learning English in our classrooms or local students gaining their first experience of the world of work, we are proud to be part of their journey.

Because for us, education is not just about language – it’s about connection, community  and shaping the future together.
