Interview with Michelle Brown from guard.me International Insurance

Michelle, could you please introduce yourself to the QE Community.

I'm Michelle Brown, and I'm excited to share a bit about my journey and what's in store for our international education initiatives. With over 15 years of experience in leadership roles within UK universities, I've had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of education on a global scale.

Can you tell us a bit about your background in the industry?

My love for international travel has deep roots. My career kicked off in a rather unconventional way - as a Human Resources Executive for Carnival Cruise Lines right after graduating from university. This role allowed me to combine work with my wanderlust, taking me to incredible destinations and immersing me in diverse cultures. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had such enriching experiences. Internationalisation is more than just a professional endeavour for me; it's a personal passion. I believe in breaking down barriers to learning and supporting students on their global journeys.

I have also had the pleasure of working at several UK Universities both in the Public and Private sector, including my time at QAHE who support seven University partnerships across London, Birmingham and Manchester.

Within UK Universities, I seamlessly combined admissions, student recruitment and business development efforts to open doors for countless international students seeking entry to higher education.

And what do you do now at guard.me?

I'm thrilled to take on a new role as the Head of Strategic Partnerships for UK and Ireland Market Development with guard.me International Insurance. I work to ensure our students have access to top-notch insurance, travel, and medical support services, further enhancing the safety and wellbeing of students on their academic journeys.

I also work hard to provide unwavering support to valued clients in the education sector, including institutions like QE schools and partners like QE agents.

What do you get up to in your free time?

Beyond my professional life, I have a few passions that keep my world spinning. First and foremost, I'm an avid walker. There's something truly magical about exploring the world on foot, connecting with nature, and clearing my mind. It's where I find inspiration and recharge my energy.

Photography is another avenue through which I express myself. Capturing the beauty of the world, from stunning landscapes to candid moments, brings me immense joy. It's like freezing time in a frame, preserving memories to cherish forever.

Any fun facts relevant to our upcoming events in Italy & Madrid that you’d like to share with us?

Many moons ago, I visited the British Embassy in Madrid and spoke passionately about collaboration and the spirit of the Erasmus scheme. I’m excited to return to Spain and meet old and new partners there, as well as in Italy. Italian food is pure magic, so I can’t wait to savour every pasta dish and gelato cone that comes my way!
