All about Torquay International School...

Torquay International School (TIS), situated on the stunning south west coast of England, has been helping students improve their English for over forty years. Teaching English from basic through to intermediate and advanced levels, they have an excellent staff to student ratio to make sure that students get the most out of their stay with them. In addition to this a dedicated welfare manager is always on hand to give support and advice, with a 24-hour emergency number for assistance outside of normal opening hours.

TIS has 20 classrooms plus a study room, resource centre and student lounge as well as a sun terrace, spacious gardens and volleyball court. A varied social activity programme helps students practice their conversational skills in a relaxed setting but also offers them the opportunity to explore local landmarks with experienced tour guides and learn about some of the history of the surrounding area.

Torquay is one of the three towns of Torbay in the county of Devon. Due to its warmer climate, beautiful beaches and lush vegetation it is known as the English Riviera and has been a popular tourist destination since the Victorian age. The English Riviera has UNESCO Global Geopark status so the focus here is on the protection and development of their unique landscape, heritage and culture. A short distance from the school is Dartmoor, a stunning national park, famous for its granite tors, wild ponies and quaint thatched villages. Torbay has 22 miles of coastline with 20 beaches and secluded coves; their beaches hold blue flag certification which means that they meet the stringent standards of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The oceanic climate offers warmer weather than the rest of England and promotes the growth of some subtropical vegetation such as the palm trees that dominate the coastal areas of Devon.

Throughout the year Torbay hosts a number of festivals and events such as the Agatha Christie Festival in September, local food and craft markets and is renowned for its hospitality with award winning restaurants, bars and friendliness of the locals, many of whom act as host families for students during their stay. There really is no better place to visit and study English than this impressive and beautiful town with its own unique appeal.
