Wimbledon School of English

What could be better at Wimbledon School of English?

As a matter of routine, the QE executive (Carolyn Blackmore) visits all QE schools every three years. This is to carry out a series of checks and these are mainly to do with what the customer (the student) thinks about the service they are getting at the school. Focal to the day is a meeting with a group of students where all aspects of their stay are discussed. We are looking for not just contented students, but students who are very happy indeed about their school, their teacher, the social programme, and everything else too.

The students at Wimbledon were just that – extremely positive and in some cases ecstatic. They realized they had chosen one of the very best schools and appreciated all the personal attention “my teacher always stays after class to explain things I don’t understand to me”, and the lively social programme, “everything is included so it’s great”. It seems that according to the students, nothing could be better at Wimbledon School of English.

Before the visit a fresh list of the school’s agents is submitted to QE and these are contacted for quality references. Wimbledon is exceptionally well liked by agents, there is no doubt about that.

The day spent carrying out quality checks at Wimbledon highlighted just how very good this school is. Meetings took place with the Principal, the Director of Studies, the Assistant Director of Studies, the Registrar and other office staff, and the Accommodation Manager (including a visit to the Kings Lodge). All areas where key staff can make a positive difference to the students’ stay were discussed.

The day spent at Wimbledon School of English proved to the QE executive just how good QE schools can be and what excellent value for money a course at WSE is.

Classroom Observation Training Day on May 17th

Wimbledon School of English is running a training day that will provide an invaluable observation ‘framework’ for the less experienced assistant DoS, course coordinators and senior teachers appointed to oversee summer programmes at the busiest time of year.

The session, which is open to all schools, will be led by Fiona Dunlop, Director of Studies at Wimbledon School of English in London. Fiona writes, “I felt there was a gap in training, something which has also been requested by other DoSes in the past at our London meetings. During the summer months lots of schools require senior teachers/ ADoSes etc to observe teachers but do not provide much training on how to carry out observations, give feedback, deal with sensitive matters and so on. So, I have designed a day to help with this.”

It is an important part of the temporary managers’ work is to monitor teachers’ classroom performance and aid their development. How much guidance and training do we provide for these newly appointed classroom observers?

Developing observation skills can be a steep learning curve and if observations are not handled in the right way the outcome may be negative rather than positive. This could lower morale and hinder rather than help the effective management of a busy summer centre.

In addition, observation is one of the most daunting aspects of a teacher’s professional life. This one day workshop aims to make the experience positive and useful for both observer and observee.

Fiona has been involved in many aspects of ELT over the past 15 years, including Teacher Training, Business English and Academic Management. She spent several years at International House Cairo and Rio/Sao Paulo before returning to London in 1997. She currently gives talks and provides training on such things as course design, training new teachers, academic quality and motivating long stay students.

As places are limited we advise you to book early. For further information and to register please contact: stephanie@wimbledon-school.ac.uk

ATC Language and Travel in Bray, Ireland

ATC Language and Travel, QE in Ireland

The school is situated right on the sea front in the delightful town of Bray. It is an easy 35 minute train ride away from central Dublin on the ‘Dart’. The train goes alongside the sea and there are spectacular views all the way. Bray, now regarded as a suburb of Dublin, is only 19 kilometres south of Dublin city centre, at the gateway to Wicklow, ‘The Garden of Ireland’. With the sea on one side, the town behind, restaurants and cafés nearby, the school in Dunluice House could not be better situated. Bray offers a wide range of shops, theatre venues, noted restaurants and pubs, with live music and entertainment regularly throughout the year. Bray is famous for its walks, with the promenade and Bray Head being favorites’.

Since ATC was founded over 35 years ago, Ireland has become one of the most prominent locations in the world for learning English as a foreign language. During that time, thousands of students have travelled to ATC from across the world to improve their knowledge of English the natural way - in the company of charming and talkative Irish people. The school sets out to ensure that students improve their knowledge of English in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.

You can be sure of a very warm welcome, experienced teachers and attractive classrooms, many with sea views. Most host families are a walk away, and the school also has self-catering residences, one of which is right next door.

ATC Language and Travel joined QE last year. Their website entry is now live, so take a look. So take a look….

Clubclass

Clubclass Residential Language School

Clubclass Residential Language School has been offering courses for adults in Malta since 1999. In 2004 the school introduced an innovative all-inclusive summer programme for juniors called Teenskool. The programme was offered with two accommodation options – either with host families within walking distance of the school or on campus in the same building as the school. The programme also includes daily morning and evening social activities and excursions.

The course content of the junior programmes offered by Clubclass is designed to provide a seamless blend of language learning with a structured social programme. This exciting and innovative approach is proven to advance students’ use and command of the English language through fast-paced activities. All courses seek to generalise learning by developing confidence and fluency, encouraging the use of English outside the classroom.

In summer 2008, Clubclass will be adding a new programme to compliment their existing products for juniors – the Parent and Child programme. This programme is for parents who want to travel with their children. Parents may follow an adult course, while their children are placed in a junior course where new language – vocabulary, everyday English, idioms and grammar – is introduced and practised to encourage real communication and rapid learning.

Parents and children can either book an apartment within the same building as the school or accommodation at one of the hotels which are situated close to Clubclass. Two apartment types are available in the residence - apartments with one bedroom which can take a maximum of 3 persons, and apartments with 2 bedrooms which can take a maximum of 5 persons.

Children will improve their English in our specifically designed course using modern interactive methods and communicative techniques. This course will also give students the opportunity to make friends and have fun in an international environment. Parents may join any of the adult courses offered by Clubclass at the time.
