This summer, junior students at the Lewis School of English’s Southampton Centre have the chance to enrich their experience with a number of workshops aimed at developing their soft skills and introducing them to university life in the UK.
The workshops, delivered by Southampton Solent University, include presentation skills, CV writing, photo journalism and a tour of the campus, including the chance to meet current UK and international undergraduates.
So far, it’s proving a real hit with many of the students!
Elena from Spain was particularly impressed. ‘It was really useful. It was the first time that I saw a university so I can know it better before I go there. I think it would be interesting to study in another country like Britain. I like the more creative courses here… it’s really innovative.’
For her classmate Elene, also from Spain, it was a taste of a potential future career, too. ‘I’d really like to be a journalist, and we learnt how they work, how they study and what techniques they use… I really loved that part of the tour.’
A stunning and very hi-tech new £33m teaching and learning building is the location for the workshops and also for the students’ English language classes, all of which adds to the inspiring atmosphere of the centre. And who knows, maybe some of these very students will be back one day as budding undergraduates.
